WEB CONFERENCE: BMS & uninterruptible power supply

Communication in BMS & point-of-load uninterruptible power supply

2023-02-14

In this web conference, you will learn more about the design of point-of-load converters for power supply, the communication across the whole setup in Battery Management System and more.

A truly reliable and continuous power supply, without any interruptions, is necessary in many applications. In such applications, often only some subcircuits need to be continuously powered. Thus, often the UPS (uninterruptible power supply) function is implemented at the point of load level (POL). in such cases the complete system architecture needs to be considered and tradeoffs among the several components and variables are necessary. All these aspects will be described and discussed.

Battery Management Systems are used for making rechargeable batteries safe and reliable in Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), Energy Storage Systems (ESS) and in other applications. For the purpose of communication among the different components and interfaces a transformer can be used to insulate the components from each other and suppress EMI interference. It will be analyzed and explained in detail how a Battery Management System communicate across the whole setup, which components are needed and what are the special requirements.

Following content was presented at the web conference:

  • Presentation of an integrated concept of uninterruptible power supply design for point of load applications.
  • Discussion about the tradeoffs needed to be met among the different, design aspects, constraints, and parameters.
  • Integration of necessary system functions in a chip for achieving very simple and compact UPS structures.
  • Communication across the whole setup in Battery Management System.
  • Where are transformers for communication in BMS exactly needed and what are their special requirements.
  • Additional parts necessary to build up a stable communication.
  • Interesting hints for a "high Voltage" proven layout.

Part 1 (Analog Devices): Uninterruptible Power Supplies for point of load application

This presentation will introduce a new, highly integrated concept of uninterruptible power supply design for point of load applications. In many applications a reliable, continuous power supply is needed. To support such a function efficiently, the complete system architecture needs to be considered.

Trade offs need to be made between the power efficiency of the design, size and cost of the energy storing element (battery or super capacitor) as well as the limitation of teh UPS to voltage rails that are absolutely necessary.

Some necessary system functions may be integrated in one simple to use IC, such as with Analog Device's Continua family of devices. They make the implementation of a UPS very simple and compact.

Part 2 (Würth Elektronik): Battery management transformers for communication

Where exactly are those components needed and what are the special requirements for this kind of parts?

How does a Battery Management System communicate across the whole setup. Which additional parts should be used to build up a stable communication.

And at last but not least, some interesting hints for a "high Voltage" proven layout.
