EV CHARGING New partnership looks to develop hydrogen-powered EV charging stations

In a bid to address so-called “range anxiety” and improve the viability of electric vehicles, two companies – GreenCore and Loop Energy – have announced a partnership that will focus on the design and development of hydrogen-powered fast-charging stations.

GreenCore EV Services is a renewable energy company that has built hundreds of electric vehicle (EV) stations across the United States since 2015, including the two largest, most complicated EV stations in North America. The company aims to provide the world with an updated EV charging infrastructure and uses a proprietary “universal” infrastructure to develop and manage its EV charging sites. GreenCore’s system has been developed to deliver EV charging sites more quickly to meet the rapidly rising demand as more and more EVs start to take to the roads.

On the other hand, Loop Energy is a leading developer of fuel cell systems targeted for the electrification of commercial vehicles from light buses to heavy-duty trucks. Loop Energy’s products include its proprietary eFlowTM technology that was designed to allow commercial customers to achieve maximum performance at minimum cost, and the company specializes on the development of hydrogen fuel cell systems for automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

EV market continues to see record growth

While the COVID-19 pandemic has hit automakers hard, and the resulting and still ongoing chip shortage continues to batter the industry further, the EV market is still going strong as companies innovate to get their businesses back on track.

More than 3.2 million electric vehicles were reportedly sold in 2020, which was an increase on record sales reported in both 2019 and 2018. Between now and 2030, latest projections estimate that the general market for non- two/three-wheeler EVs will grow by 36 % year-on-year to 245 million vehicles. It therefore goes without saying that the world will need robust EV charging infrastructure to keep up.

A strategic partnership

In July, both GreenCore and Loop Energy announced a strategic partnership that will concentrate on the development and construction of hydrogen-powered charging stations.

Utilizing Loop Energy’s fuel cell technology, GreenCore will create hydrogen-powered direct current (DC) fast-charging stations. These, according to GreenCore, will be independent from the power grid, cost-effective, quick to deploy, and have a negligible environmental impact. The stations will be capable of storing compressed hydrogen for conversion into electricity when required. This will be provided by BayoTech, an energy solutions company addressing the need for a consistent and cost-effective supply of hydrogen.

The two companies hope that this technology will help to solve the challenges associated with peak energy prices and increase access to power in more remote areas. In a press release dated June 8th, GreenCore’s CEO, Frank Baumann, said "Loop Energy is the perfect partner to work alongside GreenCore in building better, faster, and greener EV charging stations.” Baumann added: "Together, we will be able to cut peak energy costs and deliver charging points in previously unimaginable locations."
