A Power Transistor is a power semiconductor device that works efficiently under a high voltage and current rating. It has a high power rating and does not overheat or get damaged while serving the power electronics industry. While the semiconductor industry focuses on reducing the transistor size to meet the expectations of Moore's Law, the Power Transistor market centers around dynamic ON-state resistance and high switching capabilities without heat damage.

Power transistor market history

In 2010, according to various market reports, and studies,

  • Power MOSFET dominated the power transistor sector with 53 % of the market share.
  • IGBT was the second most dominant power transistor accounting for 27 % of the market share.
  • RF Amplifier occupied the third position at 11 % of the power transistor market share.
  • Power BJT was in the fourth position occupying only 9 % of the power transistor market share.

Up to 2010, the “big four” power transistors dominated the market. Other power transistors like Low-voltage FETs, IGBT modules, microwave transistors, and high-voltage FETs were slowly becoming popular in the industries.

Power transistor market current status

As of 2021, the power transistor market is dominated by FETs, Microwave and RF Power, and IGBT. According to Data Bridge, the power transistor market is expected to grow at 4.29 %. As per various research companies, the growth is led by IGBT and Microwave Power Transistors.

In 2022, the power transistor market was valued at USD17.13 billion and is expected to reach USD20.22 billion in 2028 and USD27.58 billion by 2032. The expected CAGR of the rapidly growing industry is at 4.88 % from 2023 to 2032.

Currently, power transistors serve a variety of industries like

  • consumer electronics
  • telecommunications
  • industrial applications like manufacturing
  • automotive
  • energy

The power transistors market is geographically spread over North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific, followed by the rest of the world. While North America dominates the power transistor market, the growth in the Asia Pacific region is said to increase at the fastest rate.

According to a report, the following seven companies are key players in the power transistor market:

  • Infineon Technologies
  • Toshiba
  • International Rectifier
  • Texas Instruments
  • STMicroelectronics
  • Mitsubishi
  • Fairchild Semiconductor

Power MOSFET market

The Global Power MOSFET market is expected to reach USD9.90 billion by 2027 at a CAGR of 6.6 % from 2020. North America, the current leading area for Power MOSFET, is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.6 % from 2022 to 2030 to reach USD2.8 billion.

Power MOSFETs with high power rates occupy the least market share. Power MOSFETs with a lower power rate are sold across various industries. Infineon Technologies accounts for 24 % of the total Power MOSFET market.

Low power-rate Power MOSFET > Medium power-rate Power MOSFET > High power-rate Power MOSFET

IGBT market

IGBT is another power transistor that has been selling rapidly over the years in industries like electric cars, motors, renewables, inverters, etc. The IGBT transistor is expected to grow at a rate of 8.57 % up to 2028.

Future development in power transistors

There are several advancements in the semiconductor industry to reduce the transistor size, deal with quantum effects, and improve efficiency. The recent developments of RibbonFET by Intel and CasFET by Purdue Researchers have added value to the industry. But there has been less development in the Power Transistor industry because Power MOSFET and IGBT continue to serve multiple applications with efficiency for decades.

While Power MOSFET has been the “undisputed king” of the discrete power transistor market, IGBT and FETs have emerged among the top contenders. Researchers are shifting their focus to developing Gallium Nitride Power Transistors. Since 2000, GaN transistor development has witnessed good growth because of its advantages over Silicon-based transistors. Infineon Technologies has developed GaN HEMT (Gallium Nitride High-Electron Mobility Transistor) to reduce small capacitances, and enable passive cooling in high-speed switching applications. The global GaN semiconductor market stands at USD2.17 billion as of 2022 and is expected to obtain a high CAGR of 25.4 % from 2023 to 2030. Out of which GaN power market is expected to reach USD1.1 billion in 2026.
