TDK has recently announced that it has been granted a patent in the United States for the GENESYS+TM series of high voltage programmable power supplies.

The dynamic response, ripple and noise performance of TDK's scalable master-slave technology is comparable to a single power supply, allowing up to 30 power supplies to be connected in parallel.

The patent protects TDK-Lambda’s intellectual property (IP) relating to the method that is used to control and monitor paralleled power supplies connected in a scalable master-slave configuration, technology that is used for the company’s GENESYS+TM series of high voltage programmable power supplies.

TDK’s scalable master-slave technology enables up to 30 power supplies to be paralleled while also achieving a dynamic response, and ripple and noise performance, that is comparable to a single power supply. To enable the master and slave units to automatically configure and set their parameters, a parallel data link cable is connected between each unit. With this set up, the master power supply becomes the sole point for programming, measurement, and status.

In a press release, Doron Peled, Managging Director at TDK-Lambda Israel, said: “This US patent recognises the years of hard work our GENESYS+TM engineering teams have put into developing this unique scalable master-slave technology,” says Doron Peled, Managing Director, TDK Lambda Israel. “The technical performance of the product is truly world-leading, enabling customers to optimise a wide range of demanding applications, and we are extremely pleased to now have the means to protect our intellectual property.”

Launched three years ago, the GENSYS+TM series has quickly expanded to encompass a full suite of 1.5kW to 15kW fully programmable power supplies. The series uses digital signal processing (DSP) technology which offers higher power density, improved performance, and enhanced functionality over existing products available on the market. Output voltage and current combinations range from 0 10V to 0 600V and 0 2.6A to 0 1500A. All products in the GENSYS+TM series can operate in constant voltage, current, and power modes.

Across the entire series, programming is standardised by utilising the front panel controls. Other options include remote programming via LAN (LXI 1.5), USB 2.0, and RS232/485 communications, or by using the isolated analogue control and monitoring (0 5 V, 0 10V) which are included as standard.

Optional interfaces include GPIB and the Anybus CompactCom interface platform for EtherCAT, Modbus-TCP, and other options as they are released. Software drivers, a waveform creator, and a virtual front panel GUI are provided in the software package.
