ENERGY STORAGE Tesla Megapack: Hardly controllable fire broke out

A Tesla Megapack, which was created as part of a large energy project in the Australian state of Victoria in cooperation with the French energy company Neoen, is now on fire. This has been reported by several media outlets. Because a single megapack contains up to 3 MWh of battery cells and thermal escape has created a very strong fire, the fire is difficult to control. Although the fire has not spread to the other megapacks in the area, it is expected to take between 8 and 24 hours for more than 150 Fire Rescue Victoria and Country Fire Authority personnel to extinguish the fire. The toxic smoke emanating from the burning megapack is said to be a particular problem. A warning has been issued to the public.

Cause of fire unclear

Why the fire broke out is not yet clear. However, it was announced that the fire occurred after Neon had tested the system with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). Both Tesla and Neoen said they were working with local authorities to resolve the issue.

Aside from this current setback, Tesla's Megapack is celebrating great success. According to the website insideTesla, the fact that the automaker set a record for energy storage use in the last quarter is largely due to the Megapack. It is particularly popular when used for energy storage projects by electric utilities. Since the Australian power grid needs to be stabilized due to constant loads from heat, Tesla's energy storage products are especially popular in that country. After the successful installation of the huge 300 MW/450 MWh battery system with Tesla Megapacks in Victoria, other states wanted to follow suit.
