STATIC ENERGY STORAGE The essential need for battery energy storage systems research

As governments recognize the need to move to a greener, cleaner environment, they are providing the funding and research needed. Battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are key components of any green strategy, as they allow connection of renewable energy sources into electricity grids. This article looks at some major BESS initiatives worldwide.

As the world strives to become cleaner and greener, stakeholders from OEMs to governments recognize the vital importance of batteries – and the critical need to keep reducing their size, weight and cost while improving their reliability, charge capacity, safety, and other parameters. This preoccupation with batteries arises from their contribution to the two major green sectors; EVs and renewable energy.
Electricity grids need batteries if they use renewable energy. The batteries provide a buffering energy reservoir between the unpredictable renewable energy sources and the load. They are called static batteries in such applications, and operate from within a battery energy storage system (BESS) which manages them and their connection to the grid.
